Koala Picture Books - Three to Enjoy
I was excited to receive my new book delivery a few days ago! Teaching my ‘Nursery Koalas’ class this year I ordered some picture books to go along with our class theme. Admittedly these three picture books were chosen mostly for their hardcover availability and price, but I am very pleased with what arrived.
After opening my parcel, I went for a walk through the neighbourhood and, with koalas on my mind, began to notice the gumtrees around me with interest – but spotted no real koalas (I have only ever seen one koala in the wild. That was a NYE night where cars were stopped on the side of the road warning other drivers not to run over a koala who was crossing the road).
After taking a few natural photos, I decided the new koala books needed a photo shoot too! Please, no comments about this not being the correct species of eucalypt that koalas actually live in :)
Now for the reviews...

Lift-the-flap books are always popular with young readers to capture attention and add anticipation and surprise. The watercolour illustrations have soft, warm and calming colours. The fact that this is a board book is very welcome in an early years classroom. Hopefully it will last through a year of vigorous reading!

While there is the counting element to this picture book, there is so much more to enjoy. The first thing I like about Little Koala Lost is the endpapers. I am HUGE fan of thoughtful endpapers! In this case, the swirling characters are a cheerful introduction to the book. The repetition of the text is easy to read and allows children to make predictions. There is good use of new vocabulary being introduced including ‘galloping’, ‘pesky’, ‘bill’ and ‘snout’. There are also themes of inclusion, friendship and similarities and differences that could be further explored with children.
Knowing that my school library houses some good non-fiction koala books, these three picture books will make a great addition to the collection.
I'd love to know your koala picture book recommendations!
